On this night, the Winchester outshot the Colt.
Carson Winchester collected three hits and scored three runs on his way to shooting his Texas West team to a 13-8 win over New Mexico in the Southwest Region Little League Tournament at Norcross Stadium on Monday. Winchester also took the mound for the final five outs of the game to put the finishing touches on the win for the Texas West representative, which hails from San Antonio’s McAllister Park Little League.
For New Mexico, Colt Mangino threw a birthday blast, swatting a double and a home run. But it wasn’t quite enough for New Mexico, which was eliminated from the tournament with its second loss.
Mangino finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored.
Texas West batted around in both the first and second innings, staking itself to a comfortable 9-1 lead. But New Mexico wasn’t dead yet. It rallied with a four-run third and a three-run fourth, thanks in part to Jackson Kay’s three-run homer.
New Mexico’s rally stalled there, however. Winchester struck out four batters in his 1.2-inning stint, as Texas West survived to play another day in the elimination bracket.
Texas West will face Louisiana at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Louisiana lost to unbeaten Texas East (Lufkin), 8-0, in Monday’s late game. The Texas West-Louisiana winner will face Texas East for the title 6 p.m. Wednesday.
