It’s amazing the difference a few months can make.
Using a mixture of deep runs throughout the game, the McLennan Community College men’s basketball team ran past New Mexico with little resistance, 89-64.
Avenging their only loss of the season came fairly easy for the Highlanders (15-1), opening up an early double-digit lead with an 11-0 run ignited by an Xavier Armstead 23-footer with 15 minutes let in the first half. MCC held New Mexico scoreless in that four-minute span.
After the Thunderbirds cut the Highlander lead to nine, bookend baskets by Dayante McClellan jolted another run — this one of the 6-0 variety — to increase their lead back to 15.
Though the Thunderbirds cut the deficit back to eight late in the first half, the Highlanders held a comfortable lead heading into the locker room, 42-29.
It would be more of the same in the second half, as Jashawn Talton rattled of eight straight points to push MCC’s lead up to 21. The Highlander lead swelled even more with a mixture of smothering defense and spectacular offense, as MCC extended the lead to 34 late in the half.
Javen Hedgeman led MCC with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Jashawn Talton scored 13 points while Aaron Gregg and Marquez Cooper added 11 each. Xaiver Armstead rounded out the Highlanders in double figure scoring with 10.
The Highlanders return to their home court Saturday, hosting North Lake at 2 p.m.
