MART — As Mart head football coach Kevin Hoffman walked by, he smiled at his two seniors.
Considering they were still at the top of their game, the retirement of Mark Bell and Willie Williams during the off-season was shocking. But they’re confident their successors will continue to build on the success they’ve created.
As Kwame Cavil walks the halls of the Waco High fieldhouse, he hears the ghosts of those who have gone before him. When he walks to his office from the front door, all Cavil has to do is look to his right before walking through the door and he sees his brother in the Waco High team pictures.
As another preseason practice wound down, University’s second-year head coach Rodney Smith gathered his charges in a huddle and had them take a knee.
Jeff Hulme shook his head in awe as he looked to the ground. The Midway head coach, who had been standing with his feet apart at shoulder width, slid his feet side by side. Then, he looked up and grinned.
Reicher quarterback Ben Brittain is a film buff. A football film buff.
Throughout Southeast Asia, and particularly in Thailand, a popular expression is this — same same but different. The idea being that two people, places or things are similar, but not quite identical.
Usually, teams have around half of the season to prepare for district play. That won’t be the case for the teams in District 12-6A as league play begins the third week. Each of these nine teams has only two weeks of actual game prep before the postseason hunt begins the second weekend of September.
Through realignment, the UIL sent University away from the College Station-area contingent and hooked the Trojans up with an array of schools from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area.
La Vega, China Spring and Gatesville are traditional rivals that will raise the power quotient in any district. Throw in powerhouses Stephenville and Brownwood and there’s no question District 5-4A Division I will be one of the best districts in any classification.
It came down to the wire a year ago as to who would qualify for the final two postseason berths. Fairfield put together a solid run, with no worries when Week 10 came around. Mexia and Lorena each fought for their spots in the playoff bracket.
There’s probably no one who can accurately predict how this district shakes out. There’s too much talent. Four playoff spots can’t be enough for a loaded league such as this one.
Realignment brought defending state champ Rockdale and new school Manor New Tech into a district that has seen its share of success thanks to Cameron Yoe’s run of four straight state title games from 2012-2015.
In a five-team district, the odds are high for Clifton and Hamilton to advance to the postseason. Lexington — with six starters on offense and six starters on defense returning from last year’s regional finalist squad — is the favorite for the district crown.
It will be another battle for the district crown between De Leon and Crawford again this season. A year ago, De Leon claimed the title with a 38-18 victory over Crawford the first week of district play. The two teams finished out the district schedule unscathed.
Bosqueville didn’t quite know how Tyler Webb would respond as a freshman stepping in at quarterback last season.
Hearne and Holland will vie for the district title after successful seasons a year ago. Hearne returns seven starters on offense and eight on defense off last year’s area finalist squad that went unscathed through district play. Holland, off its regional semifinalist finish, welcomes back th…
With Mart returning a bevy of players from their Class 2A Division I state championship team, the district would seem to be the Panthers’ for the taking. However, Hubbard has a history of playing good ball and may be up for the challenge. Frost was also a playoff team last year, as was Merid…
UIL realignment linked the likes of Abbott, Aquilla and Gholson back up with Blum and Covington, and it sets up as a pretty competitive district at the top.
Most of the time, the UIL is just looking to make some geographical sense of things when it realigns the districts. But if it was wanting to ramp up the level of competition, it accomplished that with this grouping.
As districts go, this one doesn’t make the most geographic sense. For instance, it’s a drive of roughly an hour and 45 minutes from Oglesby, which is west of Waco on the way to Gatesville, to McDade, which is located east of Austin, near Elgin.
