SUMTER, S.C. — Former Midway tennis player Matt Tyer is a national champion.

Tyer, a former state-qualifying tennis star for the Panthers, teamed up with Adam Krull to claim the USTA/ITA Small College Division III men’s doubles title for Trinity University Friday. It marked the second consecutive year that the title went to a team from Trinity, a D-3 school located in San Antonio.

Tyer and Krull scored a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sewanee’s Eric Roddy and Jack Gray.

“We believed in each other, but having the support back in San Antonio and on the court really made us pull through,” Tyer said.

Despite the championship, Tyer and Krull aren’t done. They will compete against the Division II-winning team Saturday, hoping to make it to Sunday’s finale and be crowned overall champion of the Division II, III, NAIA and Juco ranks.
