The Iredell girls golf team picked the best day to put together their best round of the season.
They shot a 405 Monday morning at the Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin which puts them in fourth overall.
“I’m very pleased with the improvement we showed,” Iredell coach Don Coffell said. “We improved on our regional score. I think we have a shot.”
Ally Johnson led the Dragons as she shot a 90. Madiso Ogburn finished at 102, followed by Hanah Fowlder at 105, Kyra Coffell at 108 and Savaa Potter at 111.
Blanket leads the way (382) with Utopia in second (392).
Third isn’t out of reach at all for Iredell as Tioga shot a 404.
“I think we gave ourselves a chance,” Coffell said. “We just have to go out (on Tuesday) and seal the deal.”
In the 2A competition at the Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin, Hamilton sits in fifth place after shooting a 378.
Paige DeLong and Kameron McKandless finished ninth and 13th after the first day with scores of 85 and 87 respectively.
“We did OK,” Hamilton coach Maury Heers said. “We’re on pace with what we’ve been shooting throughout the year. There are a couple who weren’t satisfied with their performance. We’ve put ourselves in position for a medal run.
Memphis sits atop the 2A standings with a 343, followed by Forsan at 348 and Wellington at 368.
“We looked at all the good things we did and what we have to do for tomorrow,” Heers said. “We aren’t satisfied. We saw the little things we need to do. But ultimately we want to go out there, have fun and enjoy it. It’s fun that we made it here.
Crawford and Moody are currently 10th and 12th after shooting a 430 and 463.
Hannah Williams leads the way for Crawford with a 91, while Maddison Perry shot a 109 for Moody.
Dawson’s Samantha Striplin – who is competing individually – shot a 106.
In 3A competition at Grey Rock Golf Course in Austin, Cameron Yoe is seventh after shooting a 395, while McGregor’s Paige Gilstrap is eighth individually with an 81.
Also competing individually is Belton’s Julia Garcia whose 76 has her in 25th place at Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown.
In her third appearance at the UIL state golf tournament, Steelie Priest is currently tied for fourth after shooting a 78 at Slick Rock Golf Course at Horseshoe Bay in Marble Falls.
She is eight strokes behind Maddi Olson of Abilene Wylie.
