During the 1950s, the Connally girls’ basketball program put together one of the most successful runs in the program’s history.
This past Tuesday night, Connally paid tribute to their contributions.
Before Connally’s home game with China Spring on Tuesday, the school honored 19 women who played on Lady Cadet teams between 1952 and 1957. In the 1953 season, Connally won the consolation title at the state tournament and in ‘54 the Lady Cadets finished fourth in the state.
Each woman was presented with a rose and a photo collage from those seasons.
The group included Verline Abbott (1952-54), Mary Ann Strahan (1952-54), Evelyn West 1952-55), Mildred McKelroy (1953-57), Margie Linam (1953-57), Dixie Leonard (1956-57), JoAnn Crawford (1952-54), Mary Ann Davis (1953-57), Meredith Rogers (1952-54), Susie Nelson (1952-54), Audrey Meixner (1952-56, named state MVP in ‘54), Nell Wiley (1953-55), Gay Golding 1953-57, Linda Rogas (1953-57), Ruby Moye (1953-55), JoAnn Hurst (1953-55), Betty Rogas (1952-53), Martha Sue Hayman (1952-53), Margie Bolfing (1952-53) and head coach Dan Lair.
