Draeshawn Hanna rushed for 225 yards and three touchdowns, and delivered the game-clinching blow in Mexia’s 36-20 win at Lorena on Friday night.
The senior running back ended Lorena’s come-from-behind effort with a crushing 76-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to help the Blackcats run their record to 3-0 in district play, with two games remaining. His run was one of two fourth-quarter touchdowns that iced the game for Mexia. The other, a 60-yard run by Matron Gearld, gave the Blackcats a 29-20 lead.
“Our line did a great job of opening holes for them all night,” Mexia coach Lamonte Chambers said. “That was the key for us on the big plays.”
The Blackcats scored on runs of 34, 37, 60 and 76 yards, breaking free from an otherwise solid defensive effort by Lorena. In spite of Mexia’s recent offensive onslaught — 143 points in the past two weeks — Lorena coach Ray Biles took little solace from holding the Blackcat offense at bay most of the night.
“It doesn’t mean anything to us,” Biles said. “We’re out here competing for championships, so we’ll regroup, and get ready for the next ballgame. The big plays hurt.”
Lorena, 4-4 overall and 2-1 in district play, has Connally and Fairview left on the schedule.
On Friday, it was quarterback Ragan Forrest who found success for the Leopard offense. He threw three touchdown passes to three different receivers, and helped the Leopards erase a 14-0 first-half deficit.
The Blackcats made a concerted effort to take away running back Andrew Marrero, who finished with just 33 yards on 10 carries. Forrest threw for 115 yards and rushed for another 64 to lead the Lorena offense.
Mexia jumped out to an early 14-0 lead behind a powerful rushing attack, led by Hannah. The Blackcats cashed in on their second possession of the game, taking advantage of an early Lorena fumble. Mexia’s rushing attack looked impressive in a 71-yard drive, capped by Hanna’s 34=yard touchdown run at the 2:12 mark of the first quarter.
Mexia went up 14-0 on Hanna’s second touchdown of the first half, a 37-yard burst on a fourth down play with 11:09 left in the second quarter.
Hanna finished the first half with 121 yards rushing and both Mexia scores.
