LAMPASAS — Coming off a victory in a rivalry showdown with China Spring and looking forward to another critical tilt against Gatesville next week, it would have been easy for La Vega to overlook a young Lampasas squad Friday night.
The Pirates’ leadership didn’t allow that to happen.
Cameron Henry scored three touchdowns on the ground and Kemoche Hobbs added a pair of his own. Jamal Williams added two TD strikes through the air as the Pirates scored 35 first-quarter points and on each of their first six possessions in a 62-7 rout at Badger Stadium.
Henry added a 57-yard touchdown to start the third quarter, and finished with 168 yards. John Richards added 101 yards and a score, and Demarrquese Hayes nearly hit the 100-yard mark with 94 on only four carries. The Pirates (8-0, 3-0 District 13-4A Division I) amassed 615 yards of total offense.
Williams was 6-for-10 for 131 yards passing.
Hobbs set the tone on La Vega’s second offensive play from scrimmage with a 51-yard touchdown run and set up his second score, a 6-yarder, with an interception of Lampasas freshman Ace Whitehead on the previous play.
Henry’s scores came from 5 and 3 yards out in the first quarter, and the Pirates also experimented by using players on offense who hadn’t been there this season. One of those was Isaiah Terrell, and he beat man-to-man coverage on a stop-and-go for a 32-yard strike from Williams.
About the only frustrations for the Pirates came in kick coverage, where Dylan Kannan twice set the Badgers (1-7, 0-3) up in La Vega territory, and Cameron Everts took advantage of one of those with a 33-yard catch and run on a wide receiver screen from Whitehead.
La Vega added two more scores in the second quarter, when Jonathan Brown caught a pass in the middle of the field from Williams, shook off a defender and cruised across the goal line from 52 yards out.
The Pirates were finally stopped on fourth down on their next possession, but John Richards took a run outside and picked up a couple of big blocks from Hobbs and Malachi Wright that allowed him to trek 50 yards for a score at the 2:01 mark before halftime.
Six of La Vega’s seven touchdown marches during the first 24 minutes went for four plays and 1:05 or less.
The Pirates throttled down in the second half, but not before Henry and Hayes popped touchdown runs of 57 and 61 yards, respectively.
Whitehead hit four of his 18 passes for 56 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions for Lampasas, which had 127 yards of total offense.
