Multiple different opposing coaches said the same thing when preparing to battle China Spring on the gridiron – they had to keep an eye on Tyrick James. The Cougars’ senior tight end could line up in the backfield, in the slot or out at receiver and make you pay.

The Tulane signee finished this past season with 42 catches for 880 yards and 11 touchdowns in addition to 90 carries for 497 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns en route to being named first team tight end on the Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 4A all-state football team.

Joining James on the first team was La Vega’s Jared Rogers. The Waco Trib’s Super Centex defensive player of the year was named first team linebacker by the TSWA after he racked up 178 tackles, two forced fumbles a fumble recovery and three interceptions.

On the second team was La Vega defensive lineman Braylon Watkins, China spring linebacker Brayden Mathis and La Vega defensive back Donta Stuart.

Gatesville’s Derrick Bayer was third team kick returner.
