HOUSTON – The road to San Antonio ended in Houston for University’s top-ranked boys basketball team.
No. 10 Fort Bend Marshall put a halt to University’s run with a 102-84 upset victory in the Region III-5A semifinals on Friday. It marked the final game for University’s 11 seniors as well as head coach Rodney Smith, who is shifting over to take over University’s football coaching job.
Two of University’s most experienced and gifted seniors, forward Antoine Hailey and guard Umoja Gibson, both had big scoring efforts. Hailey put in 28 points and Gibson chipped in 21.
But University found itself playing catch-up against Marshall (30-8), which built a 24-21 lead after one quarter and then shot out to a 52-39 gap by the half.
Marshall’s 6-foot-8 senior John Walker poured in 30 points for the Buffaloes, who move on to Saturday’s Region III-5A final to face Manvel.
Jibrael Washington and Alayiss Montgomery contributed eight points each for University, which ends its season with a 30-9 record.
