Abbott Fayetteville

Abbott’s Matthew Urbanovsky (left) and Hunter Pope celebrate the last out of their Class 1A state baseball championship victory over Fayetteville. The Panthers won their first title with an 11-7 win at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.

Defending state champion Abbott will carry a No. 1 ranking into the 2018 high school baseball season, as the Panthers earned the top spot in the Class 1A rankings by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Abbott fashioned a 29-3 record last year and claimed the first state baseball title in school history.

Three other Central Texas teams cracked the THSBCA poll in other classifications. Robinson, which returned to the state tournament for the second straight year in 2017, is ranked No. 2 in Class 4A, behind only defending state champ Abilene Wylie, which defeated the Rockets, 6-5, in the state final. The Rockets return reigning Super Centex Baseball Player of the Year Braxton Ashcraft, a Baylor signee.

Additionally, Clifton is ranked No. 10 in the 3A poll and Bosqueville is at No. 7 in 2A.
