OKLAHOMA CITY – Baylor’s players always appreciate looking into the crowd and seeing some flecks of green among the rainbow of T-shirt colors at the Big 12 women’s basketball tournament.
For Baylor senior Alexis Prince, one fan shone a little brighter the rest.
Prince’s father Ashanti attended the Lady Bears’ 95-63 win over Texas Tech on Saturday at Chesapeake Energy Arena. According to Prince, it was the first game her father had seen her play.
“He just works out in California, lives out there,” said Prince, who attended Edgewater High School in Orlando, Fla., before enrolling at Baylor in 2012. “My mom lives in Florida, so it’s a far distance. With work and stuff he can’t really get out.”
Perhaps motivated by her dad’s attendance, Prince played a great all-around game, with her fifth effort of 20-plus points of the season. She finished with 22 on 10-of-15 shooting, leading all scorers.
Prince said that her father has watched her play games on television numerous times, but his schedule had prevented him from attending in person before Saturday.
“It means a lot to see that he was able to come down,” she said. “In the past it was hard for him to figure out a time to come down, but I’m just happy that he’s here now.”
1K for KayKay
It looked like just another basket for Khadijiah Cave when the senior post scored off a feed from Nina Davis early in the second quarter.
In actuality, it was a milestone.
Cave reached the 1,000-point career plateau with that bucket. In doing so, she became the 33rd player in Baylor program history to score 1,000 points. She also joined her senior teammates Davis and Prince on that list. Among seniors who spent all four years at Baylor, that trio is the only senior class to accomplish that feat.
Senior guard Alexis Jones has 931 points in just two seasons at Baylor after transferring from Duke.
Both Baylor and Texas Tech shot the ball well in Saturday’s quarterfinal game, particularly in the first half.
So well in fact, that they set a record.
The 44 combined points in the second quarter set a record for most combined points in a quarter in a Big 12 women’s tournament game.
Baylor’s 95 points marked the most for a Big 12 team in a second-round game at the tournament, and the third most in tourney history.
The Lady Bears will compete in the tournament semifinals for the seventh straight year.
