Art Briles has at least one high-dollar supporter in his quest to return to coaching.
Red McCombs, the billionaire former owner of the San Antonio Spurs, told the San Antonio Express-News on Friday that he has approached the University of Incarnate Word’s administration in an attempt to get them to hire Briles for the school’s vacant head coaching job.
“You not only will be getting the best football coach available but also the best man,” McCombs told the school’s board of trustees, the Express-News reported.
However, the newspaper reported that an Incarnate Word source, who requested anonymity, said that Incarnate Word is not considering Briles as a candidate. Briles has been out of coaching since being fired by Baylor in May 2016 following an external investigation into the school’s and athletic department’s handling of sexual assault cases.
Briles went 65-37 in eight years at Baylor, leading the Bears to a pair of Big 12 championships.
