Chalk up a tournament title for the surging Baylor volleyball team.

In Saturday’s first game at the Jason’s Deli Baylor Classic, the Bears turned in an efficient all-around outing in sweeping St. John’s, 25-20, 25-13, 25-12. Then in the Bears’ final match later in the day, they dispatched UTSA, 25-18, 25-14, 18-25, 25-20, to win their fifth straight match as well as the tournament crown.

Katie Staiger ripped 20 kills in just three sets against St. John’s to reach a milestone, becoming Baylor’s all-time kills leader in the rally-scoring era. Staiger had only three errors in 38 attempts, finishing with a sparkling .447 hitting percentage.

Baylor (10-3) played feisty defense against St. John’s, limiting the Red Storm to just .133 hitting. Aniah Philo (13 digs) and Jana Brusek (11) led the back-row passing, and Brusek also delivered two of the team’s six aces.

Baylor will open up Big 12 play at 6 p.m. Wednesday at home against Texas Tech.
