Baylor football set to sign class today

Art Briles and the Bears have commitments from 18 players, but could add some late players to complete the class.

With NCAA national signing day approaching today, Baylor is set to sign a class loaded with offensive and defensive linemen and defensive backs.

The Bears have commitments from 18 players, but could add some late players to complete the class.

Among the new recruits, four are already enrolled at Baylor this semester — Kilgore College defensive back Josh Wilson, Navarro College offensive lineman Nick Johnson, Lago Vista High School defensive back JeMarcus Johnson and Copperas Cove defensive tackle Trevor Valdez.

Iowa Western defensive back David Whitmore signed in December and is planning to begin attending Baylor this summer.

College of the Sequoias (Calif.) defensive back Kenny Morton is planning to sign with Baylor today, his junior college coach Curtis Allen said Tuesday. Morton played cornerback and safety as a freshman this season for the Giants, and would have three years of eligibility remaining at Baylor.

“Kenny is one of the best defensive backs I’ve ever had,” Allen said. “He’s a strong, athletic player who is a phenomenal athlete. He’s also a student of the game and a real film junkie.”

The 5-11, 185-pound Morton was an all-state player at Northside High School in Warner Robins, Ga., who helped his team win state championships in 2006-07. He originally signed with Georgia State in 2009 before attending the College of the Sequoias.

If Morton signs, he will be the fifth defensive back in this class. While Wilson, Whitmore and JeMarcus Johnson have already signed with Baylor, La Porte defensive back Anthony Webb is expected to sign today.

Highlighted by four-star recruit Spencer Drango from Cedar Park High School, Baylor’s 2011 class is also loaded with offensive linemen. Boys Ranch’s LaQuan McGowan, Dallas Lincoln’s Desmine Hilliard, Kilgore’s Pat Colbert and Euless Trinity’s Nila Kasitati have verbally committed.

Rounding out the class

Baylor’s new class will also feature several talented defensive linemen, including Midway’s Beau Blackshear, Euless Trinity’s Sulieman Masumbuko, Daingerfield’s Donald Bryant and Valdez.

Also expected to sign today are Mesquite Horn linebacker Kyle Boyd, Allen wide receiver Jonathon Lee, Dallas Lincoln linebacker Devante Davis and Tatum running back B.J. Allen.
