Speaking of tourism, the second season of HGTV’s Waco-based “Fixer Upper” hit the airwaves last week and we can’t imagine a better introduction for anyone contemplating a visit to Waco or even a place to live. The series, which counts on Chip and Joanna Gaines’ stunning transformations of hovels into homes, has now been cleared for a third season of shooting, even as the second begins airing on Tuesday nights.
If you haven’t seen this outrageously popular series, do so. It goes a long way toward changing perceptions of a town too often stereotyped by what some folks see from the freeway or assume from recent history.
We notice the Gaines-es continuing to loosen up on camera since their first season, further lending to their charm and humor — something we find in great evidence in many people of Waco — though we can understand the howls of shock and dismay Chip got this season when he ate a dead cockroach found in one of the houses. Maybe that was the first step in fixing it up.
