PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Offshore wind developers have proposed uniform spacing between turbines along New England’s coast.

The developers holding offshore wind leases said Tuesday they’ve submitted the proposal to the Coast Guard, based on feedback from the region’s fishing industry and other maritime users.

Equinor, Mayflower Wind, Vineyard Wind and Orsted, partnered with Eversource, proposed one nautical mile spacing between wind turbines. The turbines would be arranged in rows from east to west and columns from north to south, continuous across New England lease areas.

Fishermen have said previous plans with varied or tighter spacing would block them from lucrative fishing grounds.

The Interior Department announced unexpectedly in August it was delaying Vineyard Wind’s wind farm off Martha’s Vineyard, directing the company to research the impact of the East Coast’s planned wind boom.
