On October 17, 1989, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake hit the San Francisco Bay area, killing 67 people and causing more than $5 billion in damages. The quake hit just prior to Game 3 of the World Series between the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. The quake, which was centered near Loma Prieta Peak (approximately 60 miles south of San Francisco) in the Santa Cruz Mountains, caused scenes of devastation that captured the attention of the nation.
