On Sept. 8, 1974, President Gerald R. Ford granted a "full, free, and absolute pardon" to former President Richard Nixon covering his entire term in office.
Nixon announced his resignation in an Oval Office speech from the White House one month earlier on Aug. 8, 1974. After a speech to staff on the morning of Aug. 9, Nixon departed the White House and Ford was sworn in.
