A 69-year-old driver of a tractor-trailer was seriously injured in a crash early Friday morning that spilled gallons of fuel along Interstate 35, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said.

Police were called to the 2200 block of North Interstate 35 when the tractor-trailer driver traveled off the interstate and struck two light poles along the side of the roadway shortly after midnight. Swanton said the driver then struck another vehicle and crashed into the car wash at the H-E-B in Bellmead.

Waco fire and hazmat crews were called to the crash to help, Swanton said.

He said the 69-year-old driver of the tractor-trailer suffered a potentially life-threatening medical episode just before the crash.

Emergency responders took the 69-year-old man to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center with serious injuries, Swanton said. The driver of the vehicle the truck hit was not injured.

Police continue to investigate the crash. No additional details on the 69-year-old man's condition were available.
