Police arrested a 31-year-old man early Sunday morning after they say he shot and killed another man in an altercation at a local bar.

Eric Hernandez was arrested and charged with murder in the shooting death of a 24-year-old man, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said in a press release.

Police responded to a shooting at Jesters Bar, 2119 LaSalle Ave., about 1:30 a.m., Swanton said. The victim had been shot in the back several times, and Hernandez had fled the bar before officers arrived, he said.

Police determined the men had been in an altercation. Officers found Hernandez and arrested him without incident, Swanton said.

Justice of the Peace Dianne Hensley pronounced the victim dead and ordered an autopsy. Police declined to release the man’s name, pending notification of family.

Hernandez was taken to McLennan County Jail on a murder charge, according to jail records. He remained in custody Sunday afternoon with bond listed at $500,000.
