The city has hired a helicopter company to clear out excess logs and debris that have built up in the city’s low-water dam due to recent rains and water releases from Lake Waco and Lake Whitney.

Rampart Helicopter Services of Castle Rock, Colorado, began the project on Saturday, using a suspended hydraulic claw to lift and remove large logs, allowing smaller debris to flow naturally over the dam. The clean-up is costing the city about $80,000.

City Manager Dale Fisseler Jr. said the weirs are functioning at about 50 percent due to the backlog, with some debris building up behind the dam.
