MEXIA — Lorena used the mighty hammer of Thor to crush Mexia in the district opener for both teams.
Thor Hoffman ran for 143 yards and two touchdowns to spur a sturdy Lorena rushing attack, and the Leopards defeated the Blackcats, 42-14, on Friday night to kick off District 9-4A Div. II play.
Lorena (3-3, 1-0) held a slim 22-14 lead after three quarters, but picked up steam in the fourth quarter to gain some separation. Hoffman opened the fourth quarter with a 54-yard touchdown run, and the Leopards later added a pair of short scoring jaunts from Anthony Rodriguez and Corey Cleveland.
Cleveland finished with 73 yards rushing and a TD.
Mexia’s dual-threat quarterback Jaylen Gipson passed for 69 yards and ran for 121 and a touchdown for the Blackcats (2-4, 0-1). But the Blackcats couldn’t keep pace in the second half, as Lorena outscored them, 28-6 after intermission.
Collin Highfill had an 82-yard interception return for a touchdown for the first score of the game for Lorena in the first quarter.
