The first public forum for Waco City Council candidates in the May 9 election is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Central Library, 1717 Austin Ave.
The Texas Voters Alliance, a nonprofit group that encourages voting in municipal elections statewide, has invited candidates from all three races in this election: Districts 2, 4 and 5.
The group’s director, Victor Dunn, said he hasn’t gotten confirmation from all the candidates, but District 4 candidates Ashley Thornton and Dillon Meek are among the participants he is expecting. Dunn will moderate the forum, as he did at a candidate forum in the same place last year.
“It will be the same as last year,” he said. “The purpose is to bring the locals up to par with what’s going on locally. This is where the rubber meets the road.”
Dunn said his organization focuses on municipal elections because they don’t get as much publicity as partisan statewide or national races.
“This is where government affects you at the very basic level,” he said.
