Karlan Downing, of Chilton, captured two top-10 finishes at the 2017 Western Dressage World Championship Show, held Sept. 28-Oct. 1 at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma.

Downing was riding the Arabian geldings KMA Papi Chulo and KMA Angelo.

The fifth annual Western Dressage World Show had more than 800 rides during the weekend. The show drew exhibitors from 29 states, five Canadian provinces and New Zealand.

In the military

U.S. Air Force Airman Mikal H. Elder, a 2011 graduate of Waco High School, graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.

He completed an eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Elder is the son of Fred Elder, of Hewitt, and Kelley L. Cloughly, of Crowley.

He earned an associate degree in 2016 from Fortis College in Montgomery, Alabama.
