Officials are rescheduling a baby shower for Cameron Park Zoo orangutans Mei and KJ to Saturday morning to avoid cold weather forecast Sunday. Zookeepers will also be on hand for anyone only able to attend at the originally scheduled time Sunday.
Guests can eat cake and watch the orangutan couple open gifts at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Asian Forest Orangutan Habitat. The Sunday shower, also at 11:30 a.m., will continue, but likely visitors will have to view Mei and KJ through a window into their night house. When the temperature drops below 40 degrees, the orangutans are kept inside.
Mei is due in late January. The baby’s gender has not yet been revealed.
Guests who bring gifts or donations for the baby shower can register to win a behind-the-scenes tour and training session with the orangutans. The drawing is Sunday.
Mei and KJ are registered at Target for gifts under $25. Find the newest parents-to-be registry by searching for First name: Mei, Last name: Orangutan. Gifts will become part of the zoo’s enrichment activities, aimed at stimulating animals mentally and physically.
Mei’s first baby, Batari, died suddenly Dec. 4, 2014, at less than 7 months old because of bleeding in her lungs with an unknown cause.
