When you put together a magazine, you always want to be fresh and interesting.

We try to provide stories each month in Waco Today that have broad appeal. We want everyone to turn every page in anticipation.

Our cover feature is the Providence Foundation Champagne Luncheon and Style Show. The event is a wonderful way to help the Providence Healthcare Network obtain services and equipment it otherwise might not get.

A peek at some of the local residents who will model in the Feb. 24 show are seen with Kat Nelson’s story, which begins on Page 24. Special thanks go to Heather Beck, the foundation’s development officer, who gathered the clothes for our photo shoot, which was a huge help to Waco Today creative director Lynn Pearson. We also greatly appreciate David and Valerie Fallas, who opened up their beautiful home for the shoot.

We didn’t forget Valentine’s Day. Amanda Freudensprung visits with four local couples — Gloria and F.M. Young, Luwenda and Al Pollard, Elisa and James Rainey, and Patricia and Aaron Peña — who share how they met and what makes their marriages work.

Congratulations to Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III on his well-deserved Heisman Trophy and future NFL career. You couldn’t ask for a better representative of the school and college football than Griffin.

We salute RG3 with a photo essay that begins on Page 43. The pages pair the text from Griffin’s heartfelt Heisman acceptance speech with fantastic images, most of them from our award-winning Tribune-Heard photography staff. Be sure to check it out.

Believe it or not, Central Texas has a world chili champion. Robinson’s Larry Walton came away with a heavy trophy of his own when he won the Terlingua International Chili Championship in November. Find out what draws him to chili cookoffs (it’s not just taste and smell) in Terri Jo Ryan’s story on Page 64. Walton even shares his winning recipe with us.

One final note to share about our new design.

Last month we unveiled our new look for Waco Today, aiming for a cleaner, more elegant appearance. Overall, we’re thrilled with the results, and readers have told us as much.

There’s always room for improvement, though.

A few folks let us know that the new body type was a bit hard for them to read. We had to agree. It wasn’t evident, however, until the magazine arrived from the printer. The proof pages that we use to check our work beforehand aren’t the same as the paper stock used in printing. The proofs didn’t indicate that the copy was lighter than we would have liked.

We’ve attempted to rectify that this month. We’re still using the Berkeley Oldstyle typeface, but at a slightly heavier weight that should make it easier to read.

As always, please let us know how we’re doing.
