Plano golfer Ethan Fang showed some fierce claws on the course during the opening round of the 19th annual Starburst Junior Golf Classic on Monday.

Fang carded a 1-over 71 in the boys 12-year-old division at Ridgewood Country Club, and grabbed a one-stroke lead in the chase for the title.

Other boys leaders on the first day included Garrett Endicott, who shot a 69 in the boys’ 13 division, John Shero (72, boys 14), Lucas Wright (73, boys 15), Peyton Burns and Zachary Slayton (73, boys 16), Chris Williams (77, boys 17) and Phillip Schmitz, who shot an opening-round 72 at Ridgewood to snatch a one-stroke lead in the boys championship division.

On the girls’ side, Plano’s Megan Daleo shot a 1-under 71 in the 16-year-old division, staking herself to an early four-shot cushion over the next nearest player. Other girls first-day leaders were Juliana Hudman (85) in the 15-year-old division, Faith Delagarza (78) in 17s and Mikaela Rindermann of Norman, Okla., (73) in the championship division.

The tournament continues through Saturday at four courses around Central Texas.
