Midway softball drops 1st game at Little League World Series
Tribune-Herald staff report
PORTLAND, Ore. — Midway’s offensive success came to an abrupt end against Alexis Staples and Sterling, Ill., Thursday night at the Little League Softball World Series.
Midway grabbed just four hits and committed three errors in a 2-0 pool-play loss.
Midway isn’t finished at the event. The team will face West representative Westchester Del Rey (Calif.) at 11 a.m. PDT Saturday.
Both Midway and Sterling stayed scoreless until the fourth, when the first batter found her way around the bases. Staples hit a triple, and an errant infield throw sailed away from the third baseman, allowing Staples to race home for the 1-0 lead.
Midway tried to answer in the bottom half of the inning, advancing Haley Moore to third, but a groundout to second ended the threat.
In the sixth, Sterling doubled its lead on another unearned run. Cheyenne Harrington singled Kylie Burkett to third, but a poor throw allowed Burkett to motor around the base for the insurance run.
Midway had a shot to catch up in the ninth. Katie Guffey and Kinley Brown made it to the corners before a strikeout ended the game.
Guffey led Midway at the plate, going 1-for-2. Chandlar Coskrey allowed seven hits and two walks, while striking out five. Both runs were unearned. Staples allowed four hits and three walks, striking out two.
