Midway, Southern teams roll in openers

FORT WORTH — Three Midway softball teams and the Southern Junior League baseball team advanced to the semifinals in the winners’ bracket of their divisions at the Texas West state softball tournaments Friday.
Southern and the Midway 9/10, 10/11 and Junior League teams all booked places in the next round with victories, moving them two wins away from state titles.
The Midway Little League softball team also opened state tournament play Friday. Calls to the coach seeking results were not returned.
Southern bombs Lubbock
The Southern boys broke out the bats and dominated Lubbock Dixie, 19-3, in the Junior League opener.
Southern faces San Antonio Alamo Heights in the semifinals at 1 p.m. today at Camp Carter.
Midway juniors top Lubbock
Midway scored three runs in the fifth inning and withstood a late rally to advance, 4-3.
Trailing, 2-1, in the fifth, Midway catcher Destiny Davis doubled and drove in both runners on base to take a one-run lead. Carrisa Goodall followed with another RBI to put Midway up two. Lubbock cut the deficit to one run in the sixth, but reliever Jasmine Sabido closed the door in the seventh to secure the win.
Midway faces San Antonio Towne & Country today at 1 p.m. in the semifinals at Camp Carter.
10/11 whips L. Fresnos
Midway blanked Los Fresnos, 18-0, and put up 11 runs in the first inning to make for an easy first-round romp.
Kaitlyn Lavalley and Michelle Olvera combined to throw a four-inning shutout, and both tallied three hits and three runs at the plate. Kendal Mackie went a perfect 4-for-4 with a pair of runs.
The win sets up Midway with a semifinal matchup against San Antonio Alamo Heights at 3 p.m. today at Kelly Park.
9/10 routs Lubbock
Midway scorched Lubbock for 18 runs in just three innings to advance out of the first round with an 18-1 win.
Midway put the game out of reach with seven first-inning runs, then drove in the stake with 10 more in the second.
Lauren Nixon pitched a pair of perfect innings and drove in two runs from the plate. Katie Guffey and Allye Beth Deaton also notched a pair of RBIs.
Midway plays Corpus Christi National at 10 a.m. today at Kelly Park in the semifinals.
