Midway Junior softball bounces back with 12-2 blowout
Tribune-Herald staff report
KIRKLAND, Wash. — The Midway Junior League softball team rediscovered a familiar friend Tuesday — its offense.
A day after being shut out in its opening game of the Junior Softball World Series, Midway blasted Canada, 12-2, to put itself on more favorable ground in Pool A.
Midway poured on runs early and often, rolling up 11 by the third inning. Minutes into Midway’s half of the first inning, the game was already a blowout.
Canada plated a run in the first inning, and Midway responded with six in the bottom half. Jasmine Sabido, Gabby Bone and Emily Curry all smacked doubles in the inning, while Jerica Moon and Callee Guffey also reached base on singles.
Midway plated five more runs in the bottom of the second and another in the fifth.
Sabido gave Guffey a break in the circle and earned the win. She was 2-for-3 from the plate with a double. Destiny Davis was a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple.
Midway lost Monday to Puerto Rico, 1-0, in a tight pitcher’s duel, giving the Latin American representative and defending champ a leg up in the pool. But Midway only needs to finish second to make the semifinals.
Midway faces host Washington from the Northwest region today at 6:45 CST in the third of four pool games.
Midway sits behind both West Tampa and Puerto Rico in the Pool A standings. Both of those teams are 2-0 through their first two games, while Midway is 1-1.
After facing the host team today, Midway gets West Tampa on Thursday, which could determine which team makes the semifinals.
