Little League Roundup: Southern, Midway squads earn shot at state titles

FORT WORTH — The Southern Junior League baseball team and Midway 9/10-year-old softball team advanced Saturday to their respective championship games at the Texas West state tournament.

The Midway 10/11 softball team lost and will have to work its way out of the losers’ bracket. The Midway Little League softball team plays its semifinal game today.

Results from the Midway Junior League softball team’s semifinal game with San Antonio Towne & Country were not available at press time.

Baseball

 

Southern Junior League 14, Alamo Heights 8: Michael Jimenez went 3-for-3 with a double and two-RBI single as Southern blasted its way to the title game.

Freddie Rios went 2-for-3 with two doubles, and Joe Cervantez and Eric Guerrero also had two hits.

Southern will play an opponent to be determined for the title at 10 a.m. Monday.

Softball

 

Midway 9/10 15, Corpus Christi National 3: Allye Beth Deaton had two bases-clearing triples to lead Midway decisively into the championship game.

Midway will play at 9 a.m. Monday against the winner of today’s elimination game between Corpus Christi and San Antonio McAllister Park. If Midway loses that game, it will have another shot to claim the title at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

San Antonio Alamo Heights 6, Midway 10/11 3: Alamo Heights broke open a 3-3 game and forced Midway into the losers’ bracket.

Midway can earn another shot at Alamo Heights with a victory over Los Fresnos in an elimination game at 5 p.m. today. Midway beat Los Fresnos in the opening round, 18-0.

Midway would then have to sweep a doubleheader from Alamo Heights to claim the title, starting at noon Monday.

Midway Little League 8, Lubbock 4: Suzanne Schroeder and Gayle Thiel each had two hits to help Midway defeat Lubbock late Friday.

The tournament opener was delayed three hours by rain.

After Midway took a 5-0 lead, Lubbock roared back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to one.

But Midway immediately responded with three more runs in the fifth, including a two-run single by Cheyanne Throckmorton, to make the lead 8-4.

Morgan Ling shut out Lubbock the rest of the way.

Midway will play at 3 p.m. today against the winner of San Antonio McAllister Park and East Brownsville.
