It was a mixed bag at The Highlands Saturday. The Highlanders basketball team celebrated Sophomore Day with a win over Weatherford, 99-85. The Highlassies were unable to duplicate the men’s feat, losing to Weatherford’s Lady Coyotes 86-72.
McLennan Community’s women’s team played first. The ‘Lassies were in for a battle throughout the night. Despite 11 points from Jaylonn Walker and an additional nine from Colandria Haynes, they were only able to take a 25-23 lead at the end of the first quarter. The first half ended with the home team leading 44-40.
The second half started as if MCC was going to put the game away, but Weatherford put together two runs, eventually outscoring the Highlassies (14-11, 7-4 conference), 22-12, in the fourth quarter, thus sealing the Lady Coyote’s win.
The men took the court next. The game seemed to follow the earlier game’s pattern as the score stood at 31-30 in the visitor’s favor with 7:30 to play in the first half. MCC went on an 8-point run and went into the locker room at halftime with a 49-38 lead.
The Highlanders (22-2. 5-1) continued to extend their lead in the second half, riding Jashawn Talton’s double-double (23 points, 10 rebounds). Weatherford made a late run, but their rally fell short, and MCC took the win.
Three other Highlanders finished with double figures in scoring. Xaiver Armstead matched Talton’s points with 23 of his own, while Daniel Pinho Severo added 21 and Garrett Shaw put up 17 points.
Both teams will host Collin County in games Wednesday. The women’s game begins at 5:30 p.m., and the men will tipoff at 7:30 p.m.
