The sixth-ranked McLennan Community College baseball team remained undefeated with a sweep of Midland in a doubleheader Saturday at the Bosque River Ballpark. MCC won the first game, 6-4, and won the second game, 7-0.
Scoring for game one of the doubleheader began when Josh Breaux hit a triple in the bottom of the first, sending Griffin Paxton home.
MCC picked up two more runs in the second on two singles, a sacrifice, a double and another sacrifice.
Daniel Cole had the win and Payton Stambler got the save for the home team.
Chase Sorter banged two home runs in the second game for MCC (7-0).
MCC loaded the bases up in the fourth, with a single by Dylan Neuse sandwiched between walks to Jackson Nichols and Breaux. A balk scored Nichols, and a double by Keaton Milford brought in the other two runs.
The Highlanders’ pitching of Shane Daughety (getting the win), Connor Heffron, Alex DeLeon, Levi David and Grant Miller combined to strike out 14 batters and allowed only one hit.
“It’s a great day to come out of here with a doubleheader sweep. A sweep of the three-game series with a team the caliber of Midland is a big feather in our cap here early in the year. I’m really proud of our guys,” MCC coach Mitch Thompson said.
The Highlanders next travel to the Houston area to play in the San Jac Tournament of Champions. The tournament will take place Friday and Saturday, with MCC slated to face Midland, Howard, Northwest Florida State and Chipola.
