The McLennan Community College HIghlassies began the season with two wins, taking both ends of a double header from Western Texas Friday at the Bosque River Ballpark.
MCC won the first game, 4-2, and came out ahead in the second game, 4-1.
Scoring in game one began in the fourth inning, with Western Texas’s Bailey McAlpine’s double allowing Claudia Gutierrez to score.
MCC fought back in the bottom half of the inning. Brittany Montoya and Zayra Olguin reached base with back-to-back singles. After a double steal, both scored when Cassie Pavlas hit another single in the inning.
The Lady Westerners fought back to score in the top of the fifth. They were able to load the bases and Carmen Spring was able to score on a passed ball.
Not to be outdone, the ‘Lassies came back in the bottom of the same inning. Genisa Marrero-Carter reached base on a lead-off walk. After a steal of second base, Olivia Lantigua sent Marrero-Carter home when Lantigua blasted a triple. Lantigua then scored off a sacrifice fly by Kaitlin Richards.
The HIghlassies’ Zayra Olguin was perfect at the plate, going 3-3. Cassie Pavlas had two hits, one double and two RBIs.
The Highlassies’ next games will be today, as they host Howard in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at the Bosque River Ballpark.
Coming off last year’s trip to the JUCO World Series, the McLennan Community College Highlanders baseball is off to a great start, as they won both games of a doubleheader, beating Angelina College 10-0 in the first game and winning the second, 13-1.
The next two games will be another doubleheader as the Highlanders travel to Angelina College Monday. The first of the two seven-inning games will be played at 2 p.m. The second game will begin at 5 p.m.
