LUFKIN — The 23rd-ranked McLennan Community College Highlanders staved off a worthy upset shot from homestanding Angelina, as MCC stayed unbeaten on the year with an 82-74 win on Wednesday.

MCC (5-0) was in a dogfight from the jump ball onward, and held a slim 35-34 lead at the half. But the Highlanders used a second-half surge to pull away with the win.

Serbian freshman Sasa Vuksanvic scored a season-high 17 points to top MCC, while fellow forward Jashawn Talton added 16.

Meanwhile, Angelina exacted a measure of redemption on the MCC women, as the Lady Roadrunners pulled out an 80-71 victory in the early game. It was MCC’s first loss on the year, and a turnabout for the Highlassies’ season-opening win over Angelina last week.

Jaylonn Walker of Calvert tossed in 18 points to lead MCC (3-1), and Velma Mitchell contributed 16.

The MCC women will next play in the Temple College Classic, beginning with a game against Trinity Valley on Friday. The Highlander men will head the other direction on I-35 to the Hill College Classic, opening with New Mexico on Friday.
