HILLSBORO – Conference champs.

The McLennan Community College men’s basketball team claimed the outright title in the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference by taking down Hill, 72-59, in the regular-season finale on Wednesday night. With MCC’s win coupled with a Temple win over Collin County, the Highlanders (26-4, 9-3) secured the 29th conference title in the program’s rich history since 1967.

It also marked eighth conference title under Kevin Gill, and the third in a row.

Reigning conference player of the week Xavier Armstead hit for 21 points for the Highlanders, who will own the No. 1 seed for the Region V Tournament. That event is slated for March 7-10 at the Tiger Pit in Wollforth. MCC will open up the tournament at 1 p.m. March 7 against the fourth seed from the West.

In winning, MCC also prevented Hill (21-9, 6-6) from reaching the region tourney, as the Rebels finish fifth.

Meanwhile, the MCC women saw their season come to an end with a 56-46 loss to Hill. Jaylonn Walker pumped in 26 points for the Highlassies (14-14, 7-7), but it wasn’t enough to extend their season, as they finished in a tie for fifth in the league. The top four teams advance to regionals.
