WEATHERFORD — One streak was snapped, the other remains.

The 14th-ranked McLennan Community College men’s basketball team maintained its unblemished record in conference action by thumping Weatherford, 91-69, on Wednesday night. Meanwhile, in the opener, the MCC women took their first conference defeat as the Lady Coyotes pushed to an 82-69 win.

The Highlanders (20-1 overall, 3-0 in conference) led by only six at the half, but opened the second half on a 15-3 run to break it open. Xavier Armstead, the freshman from Midway, helped fuel that surge with a 3-point bomb to start the half, and finished with a team-leading 25 points.

Daniel Pinho Severo contributed 14 points, Jashawn Talton scored 12 and Dayante McClellan rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10.

In the women’s game, the Highlassies came out shooting the ball well from outside and trailed only 18-16 after a quarter. But Weatherford (11-6, 3-1) rode conference-leading scorer Masha Vasilevko’s hot hand to a double-digit lead by the halftime break, and MCC (10-8, 3-1) couldn’t recover. Vasilevko finished with 24 points.

Jaylonn Walker scored 18 points to head up the Highlassies, and Velma Mitchell added 10.

MCC will face Collin County in Plano on Saturday before returning home for a home doubleheader with rival Temple College on Jan. 31.
