The accolades continue to pour in for the McLennan Community College baseball team, as head coach Mitch Thompson has been named the American Baseball Coaches Association/Diamond Regional Coach of the Year for the NJCAA Division I Southwest District.

“It’s a great honor for our program,” Thompson said. “Coaches don’t get these awards without outstanding play from the players and without great dedication from our assistant coach Chris Berry. It’s an award for our entire McLennan staff and family.”

In just his second year as the Highlanders’ head coach, Thompson led his team to a regional championship and the team’s first NJCAA World Series berth since 1983. Though the Highlanders finished the season as runners-up at the Junior College World Series, their 2015 season proved to be the second-best program history.

“I can’t say enough about how our players and coaches battled this past year, so all the credit goes to them,” Thompson said. “But we as a program aren’t satisfied. Next year, we want to win the whole thing.”

All regional honorees are eligible for the ABCA/Diamond National Coach of the Year award, announced Thursday.
