HILLSBORO — The ninth-ranked McLennan baseball team opened conference play with a bang, belting a total of 19 hits in sweeping a doubleheader from Hill College on Wednesday. The Highlanders won the first game over the Rebels, 9-3, before taking the second game, 11-5.

In the first game, MCC (15-5, 2-0) actually trailed 3-1 entering the seventh inning, but the Highlanders busted out with an eight-run outburst in the seventh. Josh Breaux and Thomas Santos both homered for MCC in the victory. Grant Miller picked up the win out of the bullpen.

Breaux was just getting started, though. In the nightcap, the slugger pounded three home runs and drove in five runs as the Highlanders cruised. Aidan Shepardson went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles.

MCC hurler Shane Daughety opened with five scoreless innings on his way to the win.

The teams will meet again in another doubleheader Saturday, starting at noon at Bosque River Ballpark.
