PrepVolleyball.com revealed its All-America team last week, and three Midway players received plaudits.
Senior outside hitter Allye Beth Deaton, a two-time Super Centex Player of the Year, was named to the site’s All-America team, while senior outside hitter Sam Sanders earned “high honorable mention” status and senior setter Callie Williams was an honorable mention pick.
Deaton will play her college volleyball at TCU, while Sanders is headed to Texas A&M and Williams to Tennessee.
Teague’s Heard clutch at right time
Of all of Tyrese Heard’s 26 points on Tuesday, the one he scored with a second left mattered the most.
The Teague senior helped his team battle back from nine points down with less than two minutes to play in regulation to pull out a 72-69 victory over Palestine Westwood in overtime.
Heard drew a foul with 1.1 seconds to play and the Lions trailing 60-59. He made one of his two free throws to tie the game and send it to an extra period, and Teague (21-8 overall, 12-0 in 18-3A) used its newfound momentum to outscore Westwood, 12-9, in OT to claim the win.
The victory should provide Teague, a regional tournament team in 2016, with a lift as the UIL boys basketball playoffs get rolling on Monday.
Heard added 11 rebounds and five steals to go with his 26 points, while Mylan Shed contributed 22 points, six boards and five steals.
