HILLSBORO — Forget the warmup. Midway proved more than playoff-ready.
The Midway volleyball team eased past Cedar Hill, 25-11, 25-16, 25-16, in the Class 6A bi-district playoffs on Tuesday night. The Pantherettes dipped to No. 5 in the TGCA state poll after dropping a warmup match last week against San Antonio Reagan, but got right back to their winning ways against Cedar Hill.
Midway (42-3) will face Hebron in the area playoff round.
Bianca Convento had her serve working for Midway, as the senior spanked seven aces. Samantha Sanders led a balanced attack at the net with eight kills, and chipped in four aces. Allye Beth Deaton had five kills and 10 digs and Miranda Youmans whacked six kills.
Senior setter Callie Williams produced a double-double with 27 assists and 12 digs.
Gatesville 3, Madisonville 2
In Cameron, the Lady Hornets showed they know how to fly out of a hole. Gatesville dropped the first two sets, but recovered to pick up a 25-27, 22-25, 25-14, 25-18, 15-11 win in Class 4A bi-district playoff action.
Gatesville (31-11) is a playoff regular, as Rickey Phillips’ team is making its 14th straight playoff appearance. So the Lady Hornets didn’t seem to panic after dropping a pair of skin-tight sets at the start.
Rosie Lee came out hammering at the net in the third set, and Gatesville found its groove. The Lady Hornets surged to win each of the next three, advancing to face Liberty Hill in the area playoffs at 7 p.m. Thursday in Belton.
Sadie Swindall ripped 16 kills to top the attacking for Gatesville. Lee finished with 13 kills, while Madison Carpenter dealt out 45 assists to go with nine digs.
Corie Tunnell picked up 35 digs in an all-out defensive effort.
China Spring 3, Fairfield 2
In Bremond, the Lady Cougars downed the 19th-ranked and district champion Lady Eagles in a marathon 4A bi-district clash.
China Spring dropped a tight opening set, but didn’t falter. The Lady Cougars rallied to pull it out in five.
China Spring advances to face Caldwell in the area playoffs.
Robinson 3, Mexia 0
In Axtell, the Rockettes busted out of the gate strong, winning the opening set 25-13, and never letting up en route to a Class 4A bi-district sweep of the Blackcats.
Robinson put the final touches on District 17-4A’s playoff sweep of District 18-4A’s four playoff teams. Lorena defeated Athens, China Spring downed Fairfield and Gatesville took out Madisonville.
Robinson will play Giddings in the 4A area playoffs.
Lorena 3, Athens 0
The 18th-ranked Lady Leopards had no problem with Athens, picking up a 25-11, 25-10, 25-12 win on Monday to move on in the Class 4A playoffs.
Maddie Miller scooped up 17 digs to pace a strong defensive effort for Lorena (36-6).
Jacey Moore tagged eight kills and Jenna Thompson had seven kills, 10 digs and three aces. Setter Ashlyn Sorrells produced 27 assists.
Lorena will face La Grange in the area playoff round at 7 p.m. Thursday in Bryan.
