AUSTIN — Kyle Doty had to settle for a fourth-place finish on the opening day of the UIL State Track and Field Championships.
The Bruceville-Eddy junior and defending state champion in the Class 3A 3,200-meter run couldn’t repeat as champ Thursday, as he clocked in at 9:51.50, the fourth-best time of the race. Whitesboro’s Jeffrey Butts, who finished second to Doty last year, won the race with a time of 9:18.73, a 3A state record, surpassing Rosebud-Lott’s Roger Hoelscher, who ran 9:26.04 in 1988.
Doty will have another shot at a gold medal at 9:45 p.m. Friday, when he runs in the 1,600. He is also the defending champ in that race.
In that same race, Whitney’s Reo Bressman took bronze at 9:40.89, the only Central Texas athlete to medal on a light opening day.
In other action Thursday, Waco High’s Larry Bush placed fifth in the 5A triple jump (46-1), Cameron Yoe’s JayLon Bryant took sixth in the 3A high jump (6-2), Bruceville-Eddy’s Makenna Saucedo finished sixth in the 3A girls’ 3,200 (11:54.22) and Marlin’s Devlon Noble was eighth in the 3A discus (139-8).
