The UIL’s track and field season won’t really get rolling until February, but China Spring’s Riley Richards already appears to be in midseason form.
Competing at the Texas A&M High School Indoor Classic on Jan. 7, Richards set a meet record and a new personal best by clearing 17-7 in the pole vault. Richards was competing for Waco’s Zero G Elite Team. He won the gold medal at the meet and broke the previous meet record held by Canada’s Shawn Barber, the reigning pole vault world champion.
Richards, the grandson of former Olympic champion Bob Richards, won the Class 4A state title for China Spring last May with a vault of 16-0. He signed with Baylor in November.
