AUSTIN – Call it the calm before the storm, as Thursday kicked off a light opening day of action at the UIL State Track and Field Championships.
Central Texas athletes competed in just four events Thursday, though that number will grow immensely over the next two days. Jonesboro’s Keegan Coble brought home the first medal for an area athlete, as she captured bronze in the 1A girls discus. Coble threw 125-3.
Jonesboro’s Alex Sarmiento finished sixth in the boys 1A discus (135-1).
In the 1A girls high jump, Blum’s Gentrye Munden cleared 5-0 and finished fifth. Munden, who had surpassed 5-4 earlier in the year, missed on three attempts at 5-2.
Covington’s Klay Howard took fourth in the boys 1A 3,200, coming in at 10:04.71. Howard will also run.
