COLLEGE STATION — Rain was the biggest story of the first day of the state tennis tournament Tuesday at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
The event, which was scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., didn’t get started until after 7 p.m. with only a handful of matches complete at press time.
Robinson freshman Noah Wingate cruised through his first-ever state match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Rockport-Fulton’s Michael McBurney to advance to the Class 4A boys’ singles semifinals.
Dylan Lane became the first player in Crawford’s history to perform at the state tournament, but he ran into a difficult matchup in the Class 2A boys’ singles quarterfinals against Corpus Christi London’s Dillon Humpall — who claimed the 1A title last year — and dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision.
Chilton’s Ernesto Fernandez, who finished second to Lane at the 2A Region III tournament, fell to Mason’s Cason Dudney, 6-2, 6-0.
