COLLEGE STATION — For the second straight day, inclement weather wreaked havoc on the state tennis tournament Wednesday.
On Tuesday, matches that were scheduled to being at 8 a.m. weren’t able to get on the court until after 7 p.m. and continued play until about 4:15 Wednesday morning at Texas A&M’s Mitchell Tennis Center.
Crawford’s Melissa Tanner and Andy McAllister finally got to play their Class 2A mixed doubles quarterfinal match Wednesday afternoon at an indoor facility in Bryan and will claim the school’s first-ever medal after holding off Poolville’s Tracy Johnson and Dylan Higgins, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
“It’s really awesome because it’s Crawford’s first-ever win at the state tournament,” Crawford coach Jeff Coker said. “They were the first to even win a game at state because our others had been beaten (6-0, 6-0). I think they got confident and realized this is a pretty good draw for us.”
With a 2-1 lead in the first set, McAllister held serve to give Crawford a large lead, and it cruised through the first set.
Poolville fought back in the second, but the Pirates were too strong in the final set and advanced to the semifinals to meet Mason’s Kenley Stockbridge and Slade Townsend, a 6-0, 6-3 winner over Miles’ Colton Cmerek and Bailey Halfmann.
“I’m really happy for Andy and Melissa, especially Melissa because she’s had a different partner every year,” Coker said. “She’s just so steady and never complains, and it’s great to see her have success like this for her senior year.”
Crawford’s pair is joined in the semifinals by Hamilton’s Caleb Horne and Melissa Horne, who posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Bremond’s Kaylee Wiley and Hamilton Hull.
Robinson’s Noah Wingate won his quarterfinal match Tuesday night, but fell in the 4A boys’ singles semifinals to Longview Spring Hill’s Dawson Penn in a tight three-setter, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4, while its mixed doubles pair of Megan Litton and Caleb Diller were handed a 6-0, 6-0 defeat by Kaufmann’s Ashleigh Davis and Hunter Foster.
Chilton’s Melissa Tye rolled into the 2A girls’ singles semifinals with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Martin’s Mill’s Florentina Landaverde, but her run ended with a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Bruni’s Samantha Pena.
In the 1A ranks, Iredell’s Ayla Coffell knocked off Lazbuddie’s Lacey Jesko, 6-2, 6-2 in the girls’ singles quarterfinals, but fell by the same score to Paint Rock’s Shelby Grelle in the semifinals.
Kopperl’s Alex Thompson and Jakob Wood managed to escape a three-setter against Paint Rock’s Tristan Bednar and Hunter Alonzo, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. They will join the Crawford and Hamilton pairs in playing their semifinal matches Thursday, and they are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.
Iredell’s Garett Fletcher and Micah Wellborn fell to Nazereth’s Troy Gerber and Trey Waldo, 6-3, 6-0 in the boys’ doubles quarterfinals.
Its girls’ doubles teams also bowed out in the quarterfinals, with Alexis Argott and Kaelyn Clark coming up short against Tilden McMullen County’s Jordan Stephen and Heather Haines, 6-0, 6-2, and Madison Ogborn and Hannah Fowler were defeated 6-1, 6-0 by Utopia’s Kaleigh Keeney and Kelsey Keeney, and Lana Lentschke dropped a 6-2, 6-4 match to Crowell’s Sydney Taylor in the girls’ singles quarterfinals.
