The Midway tennis team put together a strong showing at the District 8-5A tournament Monday and Tuesday at the Waco Regional Tennis Center, advancing at least one entry to regionals in four of the five events.
Chad Wampler cruised through the boys’ singles draw to the championship without dropping more than three games in any of his four matches to run his unbeaten season record to 22-0.
The mixed doubles team of Matt Tyer and Caroline Kutach had an even easier time staying undefeated. Tyer and Kutach moved to 20-0 by blanking each of their first three opponents, 6-0, 6-0, before taking a 6-2, 6-0 win in the final.
Midway had both boys’ doubles teams advance to regionals, with Logan Gwin and Christopher Rieger defeating teammates Jeremy Bugh and Harry Foster in the title match, 6-2, 6-4, while the girls’ doubles team of Campbell Kutach and Katie Coley took second to reach regionals.
The 5A Region I tournament will be held April 14-15 at Texas Tech’s McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock.
