Funeral services for former Waco High and University of Texas tennis standout Julian Oates are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Waco’s St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
Oates died Sunday at age 86. He won the city tennis championship in doubles at Waco High, where he was a 1949 graduate. He went on to star in tennis at Texas, playing for the famed Dr. Daniel Penick from 1950-52. He was a two-time Southwest Conference doubles champion and later joined the UT golf team, winning the 1953 SWC individual golf title.
Oates is a member of the UT Hall of Honor, the Texas Tennis Hall of Fame and the Waco ISD Athletic Hall of Fame.
