Cassidy Green stopped on second base and looked around.
She had just belted a ball off a tree over the left field wall, but the ball bounced back into play.
It wasn’t until the home plate umpire signaled the home run that Green kept running and didn’t stop until she got home where all of her teammates celebrated with her.
That was the fourth hit to score the fifth run of the first inning.
Overall, the Rockets scored 12 runs off 10 hits in the opening frame as Robinson defeated Mexia 20-1 in Thursday’s bi-district playoff game to advance to area.
“We did what we needed to do,” Robinson coach Bobby Cervenka said. “It’s a start. We’ve been very inconsistent all year. I’m going to see if this team is going to make up their mind about being consistent from here on out. That’s going to be the difference in how well we do.”
Fifteen batters stepped to the plate for Robinson as all but one of them got on base off a hit, walk or Mexia error.
The final two outs of the frame came when a Rocket left the base too soon.
“To tell you the truth, you know, all pitchers are different,” Cervenka said. “We kind of knew what (Erica Beldin) was going to do so we practiced to that. I feel like we have very good hitters anyway.”
With the score 12-0 heading to the bottom of the first, Mexia got one run back quickly as Priscilla Garcia crushed the second pitch she saw over the right field wall for a solo home run.
But that was all Mexia was able to do.
Emilie Hoelscher pitched the first two innings for Robinson and finished with three strikeouts against seven batters.
Raigan Mock took over in the circle the third and fourth innings where she allowed a hit and gave up a walk.
Robinson added to its lead with three runs in the third, four in the fourth and one in the fifth.
Every run in the fourth came in off a grand slam by Jordyn Baugh.
Cassidy Green took over in the circle for Robinson in the fifth fifth as she retired Mexia in order to end the game.
“Any time you win it’s important,” Cervenka said. “It’s positive. We’ve got a tough road ahead of us. We’ll find out what kind of character we have on this team.”
